Title: GNU Classpath 'gnu.java.security.util.PRNG' Class Entropy Weakness

Severity: LOW

Description:

GNU Classpath is an open-source project that creates essential core class libraries for use with virtual machines and compilers for the Java programming language.

Classpath is prone to a weakness that may cause weaker cryptographic security. This issue occurs in the 'PRNG.getInstance()' method of the 'gnu.java.security.util.PRNG' class. The class uses the time in milliseconds as the internal seed. Since there are approximately 2^35 milliseconds in a given year, the seed value is predictable. This may weaken the security of applications that cryptographically rely on this implementation.

Attackers may leverage this issue to obtain sensitive information that can lead to further attacks.

Classpath 0.97.2 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.

Affected Products:

  • GNU Classpath 0.97.2
