Title: HP CIFS 9000 Arbitrary Password Changing Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
CIFS/9000 is the HP implementation of the Samba file sharing software. It is distributed and maintained by HP.
A problem in CIFS/9000 makes it possible for a local user to potentially change arbitrary passwords.
The problem is due to the method in which Windows NT clients request password changes with certain configurations of the CIFS server.
When a CIFS configuration using the unix password sync option on the CIFS server receives a request from an NT client, and the passwd program string in the CIFS configuration file does not specify a "%u" element, it may be possible to change the passwords for arbitrary userids.
This problem has been identified as only affecting Windows NT clients, and could potentially lead to elevated privileges on the CIFS server by a remote CIFS user.
Affected Products:
- HP CIFS/9000 Server 0.0.0A.01.05
- HP CIFS/9000 Server 0.0.0A.01.06
- HP CIFS/9000 Server 0.0.0A.01.07
