Title: AIX piomkapqd Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
The 'piomkapqd' utility is a component of the AIX printing subsystem. By default, it is installed setgid and owned by the 'printk' group.
'piomkapqd' contains a locally exploitable stack overrun condition in it's handling of command line parameters. If the length of the string argumenting the '-p' parameter exceeds the length of the buffer allocated to store it, a fucntion stack frame will be overwritten. It is possible for attackers to replace the return address in the string with a pointer to shellcode.
Local users may be able to gain group 'printk' privileges if this vulnerability is exploited. It may be possible to elevate to root from this point by exploiting vulnerabilities in other components of the printing subsystem.
Affected Products:
- IBM AIX 4.2.1
- IBM AIX 4.3.0
- IBM AIX 4.3.1
- IBM AIX 4.3.2
- IBM AIX 4.3.3
