Title: BSDI Possible Local Kernel Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

It has been reported that there is a locally exploitable vulnerability in BSDI.

It is probable that if this vulnerability is real, it is due to an error in the implementation of a kernel system call. The error may be, for example, an invalid entry in the kernel system call vector table or an inability of the affected kernel function to handle certain arguments passed by the calling userland process. This is indicated by initial analysis of the exploit code by the SIA analysis team.

Local users may thus be able to cause the kernel to freeze by calling the affected system call. This will result in a denial of service. In order to regain normal functionality, an administrator may have to manually restart the system.

As more information becomes available, this alert will be updated.

Affected Products:

  • BSDI BSD/OS 3.0.0
  • BSDI BSD/OS 3.1.0
