Title: Intego FileGuard Weak Password Encryption Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Intego FileGuard is a commercial access control utility for Mac OS versions 7-9.1. It's functionality includes the ability to enforce privileges, log activities, manage user accounts, restrict access by time, etc.
Intego FileGuard provides system level access restrictions to versions of Mac OS that otherwise would not have such access controls. However, a vulnerability exists which allows a local user circumvent those controls and elevate privileges. Encrypted passwords for accounts are stored in the file 'SYSTEM VITAL' and may be located by searching for certain hexadecimal strings. They are also stored using a weak encryption algorithm.
mSec has released a tool called Disengage which will search the userfile and 'SYSTEM VITAL' for specific strings in an attempt to decrypt the passwords for accounts. Disengage will work if certain conditions are met(the application loads the files into memory when it searches them, and the OS has memory limitations which may cause the application to fail). Passwords for Intego DiskGuard may also be decrypted in this manner.
Affected Products:
- Intego DiskGuard 2.0.0
- Intego FileGuard 4.0.0
