Title: JavaServer Web Development Kit v1.0 Directory Traversal Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

JavaServer Web Development Kit has a Web container running a servlet engine, a simple HTTP Web server, and a JSP engine. This kit is used primarily for developing and testing JavaServer Pages and Java Servlets.

Version 1.0 of the JSWDK is vulnerable to directory traversal attacks, allowing a remote user to successfully request files from outside the public directory scope, by submitting a properly-structured URL of this form:

http://localhost:8080/../examples//WEB-INF/../../../../../

This could allow an attacker to obtain sensitive or confidential information which could be used to mount further attacks upon the host.

Phuong Nguyen <dphuong@yahoo.com> reported that on Unix systems, the JSWDK webserver runs with root privileges.

On Unix systems, an attacker may be able to gain access to a host by brute forcing the hashes in '/etc/shadow', a file which may be obtainable remotely using this vulnerability.

Affected Products:

  • Sun JavaServer Web Development Kit 1.0.1
