Title: Jakarta Tomcat Error Message Information Disclosure Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

In Jakarta Tomcat, when a malformed request is made for a Java Server Page, an error page is displayed. By default, this page contains sensitive information. For example if a JSP throws an exception the error page will include the message of the exception that was thrown and a stack trace. The stack trace contains a list of methods that were called leading up to the exception being thrown. This issue is exploitable using various malformed requests, including unusually long requests or requests that contain a string of arbitrary characters.

An attacker can gather potentially sensitive information such as the code structure behind the JSP and the absolute path to the JSP source on the server.

Knowledge of script code in use as well as the filesystem layout may assist in further attacks on the webserver.

Jakarta Tomcat can be configured to display an alternate error file. By default it is not.
