Title: KVIrc URI Handler Remote Format String Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

KVIrc is an IRC client available for various operating systems.

KVIrc is prone to a remote format-string vulnerability because it fails to sufficiently sanitize user-supplied input before including it in the format-specifier argument of a formatted-printing function. This issue is reported to be specific to KVIrc for the Microsoft Windows platform.

Specifically, the application fails to sanitize data passed when it is assigned to handle 'irc://' URIs. A remote attacker can exploit this issue by enticing an unsuspecting user to follow a specially crafted malicious link that contains format-string specifiers using the affected application.

The attacker may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the affected application. Failed exploit attempts may cause denial-of-service conditions.

KVIrc 3.4.0 for Microsoft Windows is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.

Affected Products:

  • KVIrc KVirc 3.4.0
