Title: Microsoft Windows 2000 RunAs Service Named Pipe Hijacking Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
The Windows 2000 RunAs service allows an application or service to be executed as a different user. It can be accessed by holding down the shift key and right mouse clicking on an icon, then selecting 'Run as...' from the context menu. It is generally used by administrators to run applications with administrative permissions while logged in as an ordinary user.
When the RunAs service starts, it creates a named pipe for client communication of credentials (in cleartext). RunAs does nothing to indicate to the client that the process reading from the pipe is the legitimate service. If the RunAs service is stopped, an attacker can create a named pipe with the same name, "\\.\pipe\secondarylogon".
If user or administrator uses RunAs to execute a program, the credentials supplied will be communicated to the attacker's process.
Affected Products:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP1
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP2
