Title: Raytheon SilentRunner Knowledge Browser Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

SilentRunner is a network traffic monitoring tool offered by Raytheon.

The traffic analysis component of SilentRunner is called 'Knowledge Browser'. Knowledge Browser contains a buffer overflow vulnerability in it's processing of HTTP requests. Certain oversized requests can trigger the overflow condition when a user invokes Knowledge Browser.

Remote attackers can exploit this vulnerability by sending an oversized HTTP request containing exploit code across an ethernet network being monitored by SilentRunner. If Knowledge Browser is being used to perform traffic analysis (it must be started manually by a user), the overflow will occur when an attempt is made to process the request. It may be possible to replace critical values such as function return addresses with pointers to shellcode and execute arbitrary code. At the very least, it is possible to crash Knowledge Browser.

Affected Products:

  • Raytheon SilentRunner 2.0.0
  • Raytheon SilentRunner 2.0.1
