Title: Roxen Remote File Access Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Roxen webserver is a powerful http server that runs on Unix and Windows platforms.
Roxen contains a remotely exploitable vulnerability in it's handling of encoded URLS in certain optional modules. The vulnerability may allow for an attacker to retrieve webserver readable files from arbitrary locations in the server filesystem.
The vulnerability is believed to be due to an error in the translation of encoded '/' characters. It is possible to request a document from outside of the webroot if certain modules are in use. For Roxen 2.0/2.1 systems, these modules are:
- Normal File system
- Restricted file system
- User file system
- Frontpage Script support
- CGI scripting support
- Fast CGI support
- Plain filesystem
For Roxen 1.3 systems, the vulnerability is present if the de-UTF8 or URL rectifier modules are in use.
When the CGI module is in use, remote attackers may additionally be able to execute commands on the host.
It should be noted that none of these modules are enabled by default.
Affected Products:
- Roxen WebServer 2.0.0
- Roxen WebServer 2.1.0
