Title: Oracle DBSNMP CHOwn Path Environment Variable Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Oracle is an Enterprise level SQL database, supporting numerous features and options. It is distributed and maintained by Oracle Corporation.

A problem with dbsnmp included with Oracle makes it possible for a local user to gain elevated privileges. The problem is in the design of the program, and handling of the PATH environment variable. dbsnmp is SetUID root.

When executed, dbsnmp attempts to execute chown and chgrp. This is done executing the programs from the path of the user, rather than depending on a static path, or one declared within the program.

Therefore, it's possible for a user to create a program of their own, named chown, and inside the program place code or commands. Upon building the program the user may specify the PATH variable in which dbsnmp will look for chown. Since dbsnmp is SetUID root, the code or commands contained within the new chown will be executed with root privileges.

It should be noted that this is only an issue on Unix or Linux systems running the vulnerable software.
