Title: Mathematica License Manager Connected Port Denial Of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Mathematica is a math calculation software package distributed and maintained by Wolfram Research.

A problem in Mathematica makes it possible for remote users to deny service to legitimate users of the Mathematica License Manager. The problem is in the handling of connections by the license manager.

During normal operation, the License Manager sits idle on port 16286, waiting for a license request by a client. Upon receiving a request, the License Manager gives license information to the client, allowing the client to perform it's operations.

The License Manager server does not fork established connections to another port, or exit connections using input that it can't intepret. This makes it possible for a remote user to connect to the License Manager and establish an exclusive connection. Upon establishing this connection, no other requests to the license manager will be answered, resulting in a denial of service.

Affected Products:

  • Wolfram Research Mathematica 4.0.0
  • Wolfram Research Mathematica 4.1.0
