Title: SimpleServer:WWW Hex Encoded URL Directory Traversal Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

SimpleServer:WWW is a freely available HTTP daemon available from AnalogX. It is designed for simplicity of operation.

A problem with the web server could allow a remote user to execute arbitrary commands, and potentially gain local access to the system. The problem is in the validation of URLs that have been encoded in hex.

During normal operation, the SimpleServer:WWW daemon sits, awaiting a TCP request on port 80. Upon receiving a standard HTTP GET request, the daemon serves the page. It may also provide functionality in Common Gateway Interface, performing some interactive functions.

The problem is in the filtering of URLs when requested through the CGI handling code of the HTTPd. A remote user requesting an URL through the CGI directory may escape the confines of the HTTP root directory by requesting a classic dot-dot-slash (../) extension, and encoding the request in hexidecimal format.

In doing so, any filtering to validate input by the httpd is bypassed, allowing the remote user to directly call and execute programs on the remote system.

Affected Products:

  • AnalogX SimpleServer:WWW 1.0.7
  • AnalogX SimpleServer:WWW 1.0.8
  • AnalogX SimpleServer:WWW 1.13.0
