Title: Microsoft Windows Media Player .NSC File Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Windows Media Player is an application used for digital audio, and video content viewing. An unsafe buffer exists in the handling of Windows Media Station Files (.NSC). Windows Media Station Files enable WMP to play streaming media content over the internet. .NSC files are used to gather information such as ChannelName, ChannelURL, ChannelDescription, etc. in order for WMP to play the desired content.

Due to an unchecked buffer in the section of code that handles .NSC files, remote attackers may be able to execute arbitrary code on victim hosts.

If a specially crafted .NSC file is accessed by a user, depending on the contents of the file, a denial of service attack could be launched or arbitrary code could be executed on the user's system.

Windows Media Player runs in the security context of the user currently logged on, therefore arbitrary code would be run at the privilege level of that particular user. If random data were entered into the buffer, the application would crash and restarting the application is required in order to regain normal functionality.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to a complete compromise of the target host.

Affected Products:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.0.0
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1.0
