Title: WS-FTP Anonymous Multiple FTP Command Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

WS-FTP Server, a popular FTP server for Microsoft Windows platforms, is vulnerable to malicious remote user input argumenting multiple FTP commands received from anonymously connecting clients.

The following commands have been found vulnerable to this overflow:

DELE
MDTM
MLST
MKD
RMD
RNFR
RNTO
SIZE
STAT
XMKD
XRMD

An attacker may supply a sequence of at least 479 characters as an argument to any of the affected commands. When the length of this argumenting string exceeds the size of its input buffer, the excess data will overwrite other variables on the stack and the stack frame itself.

As a result, since the program normally runs as a service, an attacker can replace the affected function's return address with a pointer to malicious instructions, allowing arbitrary code to be executed with SYSTEM privilege.

Affected Products:

  • Ipswitch WS FTP Server 2.0.0
  • Ipswitch WS FTP Server 2.0.1
  • Ipswitch WS FTP Server 2.0.2
