Title: HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Finger Client Format String Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
The HP OpenVMS finger client is used as a client application for communications as part of the finger protocol. It is shipped with HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS.
The finger client is prone to a format-string vulnerability because it fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before passing it as the format specifier to a formatted-printing function. Specifically, the issue presents itself when the client parses specially crafted information provided in crafted '.plan' or '.project' files on a remote server.
To exploit this issues, an attacker must entice a user into connecting to a malicious server. The attacker could also carry out a man-in-the-middle attack.
Attackers may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code in the context of the vulnerable application. Failed exploit attempts will likely result in a denial-of-service condition.
This issue affects HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS 5.x.
Affected Products:
- HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS 5.3.0
- HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS 5.4
- HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS 5.5
- HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS 5.6
