Title: Solaris DTMail Mail Environment Variable Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
dtmail is an application included with the Common Desktop Environment, one of the X Window Managers included with Solaris.
A problem in dtmail can allow local users to gain elevated privileges, and potentially administrative access. The problem is in the handling of long strings in the MAIL environment variable.
Under normal operating conditions, dtmail handles the mail for system users via either local mail spooling, or through a remote mail access protocol such as IMAP. To gain access to the users local mail spool, dtmail takes the name of the mail spool file from the MAIL environment variable.
The problem lies in a large string of characters in the MAIL environment variable. dtmail does not sufficiently check the size of the this variable. When its size exceeds 2000 characters, a buffer overflow occurs. This results in the overwriting of stack variables, including the return address.
This problem allows a local user to gain an effective group ID of mail.
