Title: Git Pathname Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Git is an open-source application for version control of source code.

The application is prone to multiple buffer-overflow vulnerabilities because it fails to perform adequate boundary checks on user-supplied input. These issues occur in the 'diff_addremove()' and 'diff_change()' functions and can be triggered by pathnames whose lengths exceed the computer's PATH_MAX value. Attackers can exploit these issues by enticing an unsuspecting user into running 'git-diff' or 'git-grep' commands on a repository containing overly long pathnames.

Successfully exploiting these issues may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the application. Failed exploit attempts will cause denial-of-service conditions.

Git 1.5.6.3 is vulnerable; prior versions may also be affected.
