Title: Caldera OpenLinux DocView Meta-Character Filtering Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
docview is a proprietory package included with Caldera OpenLinux, and is licensed under the GPL. It is designed to allow viewing of man pages view an HTTP interface.
A problem with docview may allows remote users to execute arbitrary commands. A remote user exploiting this vulnerability may be able to gain local access to a system with privileges of the HTTP process. The problem is due to the handling of special characters by the man program.
During normal operation, docview takes a request from the web interface. Upon receiving the request, it takes the data input by the user, and turns it into a request for a man page. The man page is then turned into html, and displayed via the web browser.
docview does not sufficiently validate input. It is possible to pass arbitrary characters through the interface such as the backtick, which could allow the execution of arbitrary commands. This would allow the arbitrary execution of commands remotely with the permissions of the HTTP user.
Affected Products:
- Caldera OpenLinux Server 3.1.0
- Caldera OpenLinux Workstation 3.1.0
