Title: Cygwin 'setup.exe' Installation and Update Process Mirror Authenticity Verification Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Cygwin is a Linux-style operating environment for Microsoft Windows.
Cygwin 'setup.exe' is prone to a vulnerability caused by inadequate verification of mirror authenticity. During the installation or update process, 'setup.exe' retrieves a package list and related packages from Cygwin mirrors via HTTP or FTP. The application relies on MD5 checksums in the package list to verify package integrity.
Attackers who can impersonate a Cygwin download mirror (by exploiting a DNS cache-poisoning, session-hijacking, or some other vulnerability) could perform a man-in-the-middle attack and leverage this issue by responding to the package-updates request. The response would contain a modified MD5 string. This can cause 'setup.exe' to retrieve and install a malicious package.
Successful exploits can allow arbitrary code to run and can compromise affected computers.
Versions prior to Cygwin 'setup.exe' 2.573.2.3 are vulnerable.
Affected Products:
- Cygwin Cygwin setup.exe 2.573.2.2
