Title: Elm Message-ID Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Elm is a mail user agent designed for use with UNIX based operating systems.

Elm contains a buffer overflow in it's handling of 'Message-ID' fields in e-mail headers. If the field value is of an excessive length, a buffer overflow can occur, causing neighbouring memory to be overwritten with extraneous data. The error is likely due to an unbounded string copy.

This condition may allow stack variables to be overwritten, and could permit a remote attacker to replace a function return address with a pointer to supplied shellcode. This could result in the execution of arbitrary code on the system of the user running elm.

Affected Products:

  • Elm Development Group ELM 2.4.0
  • Elm Development Group ELM 2.5.1
  • Elm Development Group ELM 2.5.3
  • Slackware Linux 3.6.0
  • Slackware Linux 4.0.0
  • Slackware Linux 7.0.0
