Title: VMware Tools 'HGFS.sys' Driver Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

VMware Tools is an application that provides support required for shared folders.
VMware Tools is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability because the application fails to sufficiently sanitize user-supplied input. The 'HGFS.sys' driver is loaded onto a guest operating system with VMware Tools installed. Unprivileged users can open the device '\\.\hgfs' and issue IOCTLs with a buffering mode of METHOD_NEITHER. Attackers can use untrusted user-mode code to pass kernel addresses as arguments to the driver. Functionality within the driver permits attackers to alter kernel addresses and execute arbitrary code in kernel mode.
An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges on the guest operating system. Successfully exploiting this issue may compromise the affected application and possibly the underlying computer.
