Title: Caldera uux Status Filename Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

A vulnerability has been reported for the uux (UNIX-to-UNIX system command execution) utility distributed with OpenServer 5.0.5 and 5.0.6.

uux is a component of uucp (UNIX-to-UNIX copy) which is used to retrieve a number of files from remote systems, execute a command on a specified host, and record the results (from standard output) to a given file. uux is found in '/usr/bin/uux'.

By supplying an excessively long string as an argument to the '-s' option of uux on the command line, it is possible for a local attacker to overflow the program's input buffer. The '-s' option is used by the utility to report status of the transfer in filename.

As a result of this overflow, excess data copied onto the stack can overwrite critical parts of the stack frame such as the calling function's return address.

Since this data is supplied by the user it can be crafted to alter the program's flow of execution.

Properly exploited, this could grant the attacker an elevation to 'uucp' privilege, which may be further leveraged to gain root.

Affected Products:

  • Caldera OpenServer 5.0.5
  • Caldera OpenServer 5.0.6
  • Caldera UnixWare 0.0.07
