Title: MacOS Personal Web Sharing Authentication DoS Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Apple Personal Web Sharing is a utility that allows users to extend file-sharing abilities across a small intranet. It is shipped with MacOS 9.

If a user has file sharing configured to authenticate personal web sharing logins, it is possible for a remote user to cause a denial of service. Upon attempting to authenticate to the file server with 300 or more characters, the file-sharing system will stop responding.

The file-sharing system must then be restarted to regain its functionality once again.

Affected Products:

  • Apple Mac OS 8 8.0.0
  • Apple Mac OS 8 8.1.0
  • Apple Mac OS 9 9.0.0
  • Apple Personal Web Sharing 1.1.0
  • Apple Personal Web Sharing 1.5.0
  • Apple Personal Web Sharing 1.5.5
