Title: Trend Micro InterScan VirusWall smtpscan.dll Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Interscan Viruswall is a virus scanner distributed and maintained by Trend Micro. It is designed to scan for virus occurences in both incoming and outgoing traffic via SMTP, FTP, and HTTP at the gateway of the network.
There is a buffer overflow in smtpscan.dll, a component of Interscan VirusWall which ships as part of the product, and supports certain web-base administration functions.
These functions can be accessed through commands embedded in querystrings submitted to the server. If certain long strings are supplied as arguments to such a query, a buffer overflow will occur in the affected dll (smtpscan.dll).
If the string used to exploit this overflow is properly structured, attackers can execute arbitrary code within Interscan VirusWall's SYSTEM security context.
Successful exploitation can result in a complete compromise of the host.
Affected Products:
- Trend Micro InterScan VirusWall for Windows NT 3.51.0
