Title: UnixWare SU Command Line Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
UnixWare is the variant of the Unix Operating System distributed and maintained by Caldera.
A problem with the operating system makes it possible for a local user to gain elevated privileges. This vulnerability may be exploited to gain administrative access, resulting in complete compromise of the integrity of the system.
The problem is due to the handling of arguments by the su program. A documented buffer overflow buffer overflow in the su program exists, although the exact details of how this vulnerability is exploited aren't available. From the available information, it's clear that upon supplying a long argument to the su program, it's possible to overflow a buffer within the program, resulting in a stack overflow and the overwriting of stack variables, including the return address.
This problem could result in the execution of arbitrary code as root, and result in a local user gaining an interactive root shell locally.
