Title: Netscape PublishingXPert Local File Reading Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Netscape PublishingXpert is an e-commerce application distributed by Netscape. PublishingXpert manages user information, sending them special ads and personalized content.
A problem with PublishingXpert makes it possible for a remote user to gain access to local files. By exploiting this vulnerablity, it's possible for a remote user to read any file on the system that is readable by the UID of the http process. This may be used to launch an information gathering attack against a site.
The problem occurs in the handling of input by the PSCOErrPage.htm page. When attempting to access a page that does not exist, this page normally handles the referral of the client to the error message on the system. However, it's possible for the client to specify the path name to a different file, which the PSCOErrPage.htm handler will display, providing the http process has read access to the file.
Affected Products:
- Netscape PublishingXpert 2.0.0
- Netscape PublishingXpert 2.2.0
- Netscape PublishingXpert 2.5.0
