Title: Solaris cb_reset Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the 'cb_reset' command included with the SUNWsspop package for SunOS.
The overflow occurs when a long string is passed to the 'cb_reset' program from the command line. The string is copied into an internal buffer without performing bounds checking. If the string exceeds approximately 600 characters in length, the extraneous data overwrites neighbouring memory.
Because the cb_reset program is installed setuid root, it may be possible for a local user to execute arbitrary code with those privileges by overwriting a function return address with a pointer to user-supplied instructions, or 'shellcode.'
Affected Products:
- Sun Solaris 8
