Title: Netwin SurgeFTP Server MS-DOS Device Name Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

SurgeFTP is a multiplatform FTP server from Netwin Software, with versions supporting Windows NT, 2000, 95 and 98 as well as RedHat Linux 5-7 and FreeBSD.

By attempting to open a directory named for certin MS-DOS devicenames (ie 'con/con') a remote attacker can cause Windows versions of SurgeFTP to crash, requiring a restart.

A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause a denial of FTP service. Because SurgeFTP supports anonymous FTP by default, attackers do not need credentials to launch such an attack. The denial of service would occur until the service is restarted by the administrator.

Affected Products:

  • NetWin SurgeFTP 1.0.0b Win 95/98
  • NetWin SurgeFTP 2.0.0a Win 95/98
