Title: Cisco TFTPD Server Directory Traversal Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

The Cisco TFTPD server is a freely available software package distributed and maintained by Cisco Systems. The software package is designed to give Microsoft Windows systems the ability to serve files via the Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP).

A problem with the server could allow a remote user to gain access to sensitive files on a system using the daemon. This could lead to a remote user gaining access to system files, or other items of a sensitive nature.

During normal operation, the tftpd sits idle on the machine, waiting for an incoming request. Upon receiving a request, the connection is negotiated, file served from the tftp directory on the system, and connection terminated.

The problem with the Cisco tftpd is that it does not validate input. It is possible for a remote user to connect to the tftpd, and upon connecting, request a file in the directory above the tftp root directory using the dot-dot notation (..). Upon doing so, a remote user may traverse the entire directory structure, and potentially download any file contained within the directory tree of the drive hosting the tftp root directory.

Affected Products:

  • Cisco TFTP Server 1.1.0
