Title: NetSQL Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

NetSQL is an implementation of a database and toolset distributed by Munica Corporation. NetSQL is part of 5 piece software package called the Webpak, containing utilities for features such as web boards, membership, and online calendars.

A problem in NetSQL allows remote users to gain elevated privileges. Exploitation of this vulnerability can allow a remote attacker to gain a remote root shell, and result in complete compromise of the vulnerable server.

Under normal operation, the NetSQL server listens on port 6500 for incoming connections. Upon receiving a connection, the server negotiates the connection, and initiates the authentication and connection sequence.

The problem involves the negotiation of connections during a client-server interaction. Upon connecting to the server, it's possible to send a custom-crafted string of 180 bytes to the server, causing a stack based overflow.

The daemon runs as root by default. This allows a remote user to overwrite stack variables, including the return address, and execute code as root. A remote user may then gain remote administrative access to the affected system.

Affected Products:

  • Munica NetSQL 1.0.0
