Title: Rxvt Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Rxvt is a color VT102 terminal emulator for X intended as an xterm(1) replacement.

A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the rxvt internal tt_printf() function, used to write printf() formatted data to stdout.

The condition is the result of an unbounded string copy into a fixed-sized buffer. When a user-supplied rxvt window name longer than approximately 256 characters is printed using the tt_printf() function, the internal buffer is overflowed. The window name can be supplied to rxvt with the '-T' or '-name' command line options.

Because rxvt is installed setgid 'utmp' by some system configurations, it may be possible for local users to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code/commands with these privileges.

Affected Products:

  • rxvt rxvt 2.6.1
  • rxvt rxvt 2.6.2
