Title: Cisco NRP2 Unauthorized Telnet Access Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
The Cisco Node Route Processor 2 card is a module designed to enhance the services of the Cisco 6400 series broadband aggregators. It is distributed by Cisco Systems.
A problem in the default configuration of the Node Route Processor 2 (NRP2) makes it possible for a user to gain access to vtys, and potentially any system behind the NRP2.
During normal operation, the NRP2 uses vtys for configuration and management. These vtys are accessed remotely via telnet, and require a password to authenticate and gain access. Under default configuration, the NRP2 should not permit access to vtys until a password has been set.
A problem in recent revisions of Cisco IOS make it possible for a user to gain access to a vty. Due to inadequate default access control, there are no default passwords set on vtys. In addition to this problem, IOS permits any remote user access to a vty, therefore allowing any remote user to telnet to the NRP2, and gain access to any system behind the NRP2.
Affected Products:
- Cisco 6400 NRP2 12.1.0DC
