Title: SiteWare Editor Desktop Directory Traversal Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Screaming Media is a provider for custom web content. SiteWare Editor Desktop is the web-based administration tool for managing Screaming Media content.
SiteWare Editor Desktop is prone to directory traversal attacks.
The problem exists with SWEditServlet, which will attempt to serve templates from the '../SITEWare/Control/' directory. However, because it does not filter '../' sequences from HTTP requests, it will still perform its function if the directory is traversed and a file from another directory is specified.
Directory traverals are crafted into a URL containing the default login address of SiteWare Editor:
/SWEditServlet?station_path=Z&publication_id=2043&template=login.tem
The value of the 'template' variable can be set to an arbitrary webserver-readable file on the filesystem, its path relative to the working directory of the script using '../' directories. The contents of the file will be ouput to the client when the query is submitted.
Disclosure of sensitive files to an attacker may lead to more 'intelligent' attacks which may further compromise the host.
