Title: Multiple Vendor Libcurses Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

The curses library is a basic system library that is used for CRT screen handling. It is used by many terminal independent character-based applications.

It is believed that the implementation of libcurses used by multiple vendors contains a buffer overflow vulnerability. If the size of the 'TERM' environment variable is 4800 bytes in length, applications linked to libcurses will crash, likely due to a segmentation violation. It is possible that the cause is a buffer overflow which causes corruption of a stack frame.

If this behaviour is indeed due to a buffer overflow condition, it may be possible for hackers to exploit setuid utilities that are linked to libcurses. This may result in a system compromise.

This vulnerability may also exist in other programs such as su, reject, and lpsystem. The pathology of these vulnerabilities is similar, although there is currently no data to support this. These programs are, however, exploitable via a similar mechanism, which leads Securityfocus staff to believe this is the case.
