Title: Slackware World-Writable Valid Shell List Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

A vulnerability exists in Slackware Linux version 7.1.

During the default installation of Slackware Linux, the /etc/shells file is installed with world-writable permissions. This text file contains the full pathnames of valid login shells, and is commonly used by services such as ftp to check the validity of a user's shell during authentication.

By removing data from the /etc/shells file, a local attacker could effectively cause a denial of service to users attempting to use applications which rely on the data contained in the file.

Affected Products:

  • Slackware Linux 7.1.0
