Title: XFree86 xfs Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

The X font server, or 'xfs' included as part of XFree86 may be vulnerable to a denial of service condition.

The font server is a daemon that listens on a network port and serves X fonts to X servers. It can be used to serve fonts to individual users, or to multiple users across a network.

By connecting numerous times and sending random data, it may be possible to cause the service to stop responding. Because an X server will often depend on the font server to continue to operate, causing xfs to crash will also cause the X server to crash.

Affected Products:

  • XFree86 xfs 4.0.1
  • XFree86 xfs 4.0.3
