Title: TIATunnel Authentication Mechanism Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

TIAtunnel is a freely available IRC session bouncing software package. It is distributed by the pkcrew.

A problem in the software package makes it possible for a remote user to exploit the package and gain a shell on a system running the affected software. This shell inherits the permissions of the TIAtunnel process.

During normal operation, the TIAtunnel process sits idle on the network, waiting to accept a connection from an IRC client. Upon receiving a connection, the process verifies the authorization of the remote IRC client by presenting it with an authentication request.

The problem is due to insufficient checking of input from IRC client to the authentication mechanism. It is possible for a remote user to supply a string greater than 512 characters, which goes unchecked by the authentication mechanism. This results in an overflow, overwriting variables, including the return address, on the stack.

In exploiting this, the user may execute code, resulting in a remote interactive shell with the privileges of the TIAtunnel process.

Affected Products:

  • PKCrew TIAtunnel 0.9.0alpha2
