Title: SunOS mail HOME Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the /usr/bin/mail included with SunOS 5.8 for x86.

The overflow occurs when a long string is given as the HOME environment variable. The variable is copied into an internal buffer without performing bounds checking. If the variable exceeds approximately 1100 characters in length, the extraneous data overwrites neighbouring memory.

Because the mail program is installed setgid 'mail' by default, it may be possible for a local user to execute arbitrary code as that group by overwriting a function return address with a pointer to attacker-supplied instructions, or 'shellcode.'

Affected Products:

  • Sun Solaris 8_x86
