Title: Solaris mailtool Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
The mailtool program included with OpenWindows in Solaris contains a buffer overflow vulnerability which may allow local users to execute arbitrary code/commands with elevated privileges.
The overflow occurs when a long string is given as the OPENWINHOME environment variable. This variable is copied into an internal buffer without performing bounds checking. If the variable exceeds approximately 1010 characters in length, the extraneous data overwrites neighboring memory.
Because the mailtool program is installed setgid 'mail' by default, it may be possible for a local user to execute arbitrary code as that group by overwriting a function return address with a pointer to attacker-supplied instructions, or 'shellcode.'
Affected Products:
- Sun Solaris 8
