Title: Apple Mac OS X v10.5.2 2008-001 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Apple Mac OS X is prone to multiple security vulnerabilities.
These issues affect Mac OS X and various applications, including Launch Services, Mail, NFS, Parental Controls and Terminal.
Attackers may exploit these issues to execute arbitrary code, trigger denial-of-service conditions, escalate privileges, and potentially compromise vulnerable computers.
Apple Mac OS X 10.5.1 and prior versions are vulnerable to these issues.
The following specific issues were reported:
- A security vulnerability in X11 allows X11 servers to connect to network clients when the 'Allow connections from network client' option is disabled. This issue is being tracked by CVE-2008-0037. This issue affects Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.5.1.
- A vulnerability affects Launch Services. Attackers can execute a program that has been uninstalled, provided that the program exists in a Time Machine backup. This issue is being tracked by CVE-2008-0038. This issue affects Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.5.1.
- A vulnerability affects Mail. Attackers can launch arbitrary applications. This issue is caused by Mail's handling of the file:// URL. An attacker can exploit this issue by enticing an unsuspecting victim to click on a URL contained in a message. Successfully exploiting this issue will allow the attacker to launch arbitrary applications without warning. This issue is being tracked by CVE-2008-0039. This issue affects Mac OS X 10.4.11.
- A memory-corruption vulnerability occurs in the NFS when handling 'mbuf' chains. If the affected computer is used as an NFS client or server, an attacker can cause the computer to crash or arbitrary code to run with superuser privileges. This issue is being tracked by CVE-2008-0040. This issue affects Mac OS X 10.5.0 and 10.5.1.
- An information-disclosure vulnerability affects Parental Controls. Specifically, when Parental Controls is set to manage web content, the application will contact 'www.apple.com' when a website becomes unblocked. This will allow attackers to determine which computers are running Parental Controls. This issue is being tracked by CVE-2008-0041. This issue affects Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.5.1
- An input-validation vulnerability occurs in Terminal when processing URL schemes. An attacker can exploit this issue by enticing an unsuspecting victim to view a malicious web page. Successfully exploiting this issue will allow attackers to execute arbitrary code within the context of the affected application. This issue is being Tracked by CVE 2008-0042. This issue affects Mac OS X 10.4.11, 10.5 and 10.5.1.
