Title: Multiple Vendor rpc.yppasswdd Buffer Overrun Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

The rpc.yppasswdd server is used to handle password change requests from yppasswd and modify the NIS password file.

A buffer overrun vulnerability has been discovered in the rpc.yppasswdd utility distributed by multiple vendors.

The vulnerability can be exploited remotely by triggering a call to the YPPASSWDPROC_UPDATE() function with malicious parameters. The said function takes two functions, the old password and a passwd structure respectively. The YPPASSWDPROC_UPDATE() function later calls the changepassword() function, which in turn references the pw_name field of the passwd structure.

The vulnerability lies in the fact that insufficient bounds checking is carried out within the changepassword() function. As the pw_name string is copied into an internal memory buffer via the strcpy() function, it is possible to corrupt process memory.

An attacker may be capable of exploiting this issue to seize control of the program's execution flow. This could be accomplished by overwriting a sensitive memory variable or influencing the value of a control register. Successful exploitation will result in the execution of arbitrary code with superuser privileges.

It should be noted that the precise technical details regarding this vulnerability may differ depending on each vendor. The details described above have been confirmed to describe this issue for the HP-UX operating system.
