Title: HP OpenView ECSD Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

HP OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM) is a system management software package distributed by HP. It is designed for use on enterprise systems, and offers remote administrative facilities.

A problem in the handling of input by the Event Correlation Services daemon (ecsd) could lead to local privilege elevation. This problem may make it possible for a user with local access to a system using the vulnerable software to gain administrative privileges.

During normal operation, the Event Correlation Services daemon functions as notification package to a management node, which upon sending a message to a management station, receives and processes automated events predetermined by the administrative staff.

The vulnerability in this software exists in the command line argument parsing by the ecsd. Upon launching the daemon with a "-restore-config" option of 313 bytes, it is possible to create a buffer overflow. This buffer overflow could lead to the overwriting of variables on the stack, and potentially execution of arbitrary code by a local user. As the program is installed SUID root, this could make it possible for a local user to gain administrative privileges.
