Title: Microsoft Word RTF Template Macro Execution Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Microsoft Word has a security feature which prompts a user before opening a document containing macros. A vulnerability exists in the security feature which could enable embedded macros to be run with the privileges of the local user.
RTF (Rich Text Format) documents contain the ability to be linked to RTF 'templates'. These templates can contain macro code. Microsoft Word contains a vulnerability that may lead to macros within RTF 'templates' being executed without warning the user or prompting for permission. It may therefore be possible for RTF documents to be created that are linked to RTF 'templates' containing malicious macro code. When the user opens the RTF document, the macro within the RTF template will execute without the user knowing.
The vulnerability is the result of the security feature lacking checks for macros in RTF 'templates'.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could assist in further attacks against the victim, or possibly lead to a complete compromise of the target.
