Title: IIS WebDav Lock Method Memory Leak DoS Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Microsoft IIS 5.0 is vulnerable to a denial of service attack.

A flaw in the WebDav extensions (specifically httpext.dll versions prior to 0.9.3940.21) allow a remote attacker to carry out a DoS by repeatedly requesting nonexistent files via the HTTP LOCK method.

This leads to a complete consumption of memory resources, eventually crashing the host and requiring a restart.

Note that an attacker may deliberately prevent the server from restarting, thus indefinitely prolonging the denial of service.

Affected Products:

  • Microsoft IIS 5.0
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
