Title: NetProwler Password Facilities Weak Design Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

NetProwler is the intrusion detection software package distributed by Symantec Corporation. NetProwler offers numerous enterprise-level intrusion detection features.

Problems with the software package have been discovered that could increase the probability of a brute force password attack. Upon success of a brute force attack, the intruder would have full access to the NetProwler environment.

The first problem occurs in the setting of a weak default password. Upon install, the NetProwler software package sets the default password for the management environment to "admin." During install, a prompt is never made to change this password, or to warn of the default password setting.

The second problem occurs in the handling of special characters by the management interface. The agents installed on hosts are capable of handling characters |, ", \, ', :, *, ?, <, and >. When the management interface is used, it contacts the agents, and sends the password to the agent. However, the management interface is not capable of handling these passwords, leaving two options: either not use the aforementioned special characters (which is more feasible), or not use the management interface (which is entirely unfeasible). By not using the special characters, password strength is reduced from 6.6x10^15, to a strength of 2.2x10^14 in a typical 8 character password.

Affected Products:

  • Symantec NetProwler 3.5.0
  • Symantec NetProwler 3.5.1
