Title: Novell Client for Windows 'nicm.sys 'Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Novell Client for Windows allows users to access Novell services from remote computers.
The client is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability because it fails to adequately handle user-supplied input.
The vulnerability occurs because user-mode software can be passed using kernel-mode addresses to the affected driver. The 'nicm.sys' driver is loaded at system startup and allows any user to open the '\.\nicm' device. The user can then supply IOCTLs with a 'METHOD_NEITHER' buffering mode specified.
An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with kernel-level privileges. Successfully exploiting this issue will result in the complete compromise of affected computers.
Novell Client for Windows 4.91 SP3 and SP4 are vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.
Affected Products:
- Novell Client 4.91 SP3
- Novell Client 4.91 SP4
