Title: Microsoft Index Server Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Microsoft Index Server enables text searches on an internet or intranet site via a web browser. Index Server ships with Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
An unchecked buffer exists in the section of code which handles search requests.
A host running Microsoft Index Server 2.0 is susceptible to the execution of arbitrary code, due to unchecked buffer in section of code that handles search requests. If a search request is made using specially crafted data, Index Server will experience a buffer overflow and allow the execution of arbitrary code. Unfortunately, the Index Server runs in the LOCAL SYSTEM context; therefore, the attacker can specify arbitrary code to be run at SYSTEM privileges.
The attacker must be logged in with a named pipe connection created to the affected server.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to complete compromise of the target host.
Affected Products:
- Microsoft IIS 4.0.0
- Microsoft Index Server 2.0.0
