Title: ClamAV Multiple Insecure File Handling and Scanner Bypass Vulnerabilities

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

ClamAV is an antivirus application for Microsoft Windows and UNIX-like operating systems.

ClamAV is prone to multiple vulnerabilities because it handles files in an insecure way and because it fails to scan certain files.

The specific vulnerabilities are as follows:

- The software creates temporary files in an insecure way. The 'cli_gentempfd()' function insecurely uses the 'rand()' function to generate unique filenames and fails to use the 'O_EXCL' flag when creating files. The function also reseeds the random number generator every invocation with predictable information. This allows attackers to guess the resulting temporary filenames, allowing symlink attacks.

- A scanner-bypass vulnerability occurs because the application fails to recognize Base64-encoded files. Files encoded in Base64 that begin with 'begin-base64' will not be scanned.

- The 'sigtool' binary fails to properly ensure that files do not exist before it writes to them. The files have predictable names similar to '%filename%.ascii'. This occurs when the utility is used with the 'utf16-decode' option.

A successful attack may allow attackers to perform symlink attacks or to bypass scanning. Exploits may aid in further attacks.

ClamAV 0.92 is vulnerable to these issues; other versions may also be affected.
